About Dr. G. Subramanyam

Prof . Subramanyam Gangapatnam was born in an agricultural family on 1-7-1941. He passed his M.B.B.S. in the year 1964 from Guntur medical college, M.D and D.M cardiology from Delhi University. He was conferred DSC( Hon ) by NTR MEDICAL UNIVERSITY IN 2022.

He was appointed as Assistant Professor of Cardiology at NIMS Hyderabad, later he continued as a professor of Cardiology for 36 years at various National and International institutions. During this period he was appointed as Director/Vice-chancellor for SVIMS University (1999-2009), Chairman of super speciality courses at Kathmandu University CMS Bharatpur NEPAL (2009-2010), Director of research Narayana medical institutions Nellore (2010 -2019) and coordinator for PhD studies of NTR University (2017-2019).

He was the teacher for M.B.B.S, M.D, and D.M students for 54 years till the age of 78 years. Students used to flock around his classes, He was given the best teacher award by the Government of A.P. in 1988 and graded as the best speaker during the postgraduate period. He has started at SVIMS Tirupati various super speciality courses like D M Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology and allied MCH courses and endocrinology apart from broad speciality courses. He was later invited to Nepal in 2010 to start super speciality courses i.e. D.M and MCH. He was appointed as Chairman of Super Specialty courses at Kathmandu University and he started D.M Cardiology, Nephrology and allied MCH courses for the first time at Kathmandu University, Nepal. He was awarded as an administrator of par excellence by the Chief Minister of A.P. in 2008, the Best Cardiology services award 1991-1994 and the Life Time Achievement award by Vellore Canada Foundation on 30-04-2006.He was invited to be an editorial advisor for experimental cardiology and preventive Cardiology in the Indian Heart Journal. He trained thousands of doctors and inspired many physicians to do D.M. Cardiology. As vice chancellor of SVIMS has witnessed an exemplary performance by getting recognition under 12(b)  by UGC, under the PMSSY  programme 6 million rupees were sanctioned by the Government of India to make it on par with AIIMS and received special sanction by DBT, ICMR and WHO to develop Biotechnology Bioinformatics and stem cell centre. PhD course was started in Bioinformatics for the first time in South India apart from Biotechnology with the advice of His Majesty President of India Dr Abdul Kalam, President of India. In the wake of ICMR picking up SVIMS as one of the three premier research centres in the country for WHO-funded projects to provide better healthcare solutions through information technology, it has gained importance in stem cell research. SVIMS was the only centre in southern India to get the rare credit hence it could become the fountainhead of Biotechnology research centres in the region. AP CSI Gold medal was presented by CSI in 2017 and stated “Erudite yet humble the empathy and compassion Dr.G.Subramanyam exudes have endeared him to his peers and patients alike. His area of research interest includes trace elements in atherosclerosis and regenerative medicine i.e. stem cells. It is pure delight and awe to watch him arrive at 6 A.M, complete his teaching assignment, attend to his patients and continue to work up to 6 P.M in his Micronutrient and stem cell lab”. He received the Amalananda Das Searle award in 1988 for micronutrient research and prevention of heart attack by the Cardiological Society of India at science city Calcutta. He received 3 more awards in 2018 from CSI for the same research on Micronutrients. He has published 157 papers in both National and international journals and published 7 books, two of them on Micronutrients and the other one on Stem cells. 

He started the Andhra Pradesh Cardio Logical Society in 1988 and amalgamated CAS and CS to become APGDA. He became the first president in the combined state both for C SI and APGDA  He was appointed as Governing council member of the Indira Gandhi Institute of medical sciences Patna and observer of the Institute of medical sciences, Arunachala Pradesh during 2004-2007 and executive member of the S .V. university  during  2002- 2004

He has given invited lectures and presented papers in various centres in India, Canada, Utrecht Netherlands, Stockholm Sweden, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and China. He addressed all the vice-chancellors on higher education in Bangkok during the vice-chancellor conference. He became an executive member of the Asian Pacific atherosclerosis research society and the All India university vice chancellor association.

He received the Ronald Ross Research Award and fellowship in tissue engineering in 2017 as one among 500 in the world out of 5324 nominations from 63 countries by IASR, USA for his great scientific contribution. Patients used to come for stem cell treatment before 2009 from various parts of Southern India to SVIMS as it was the only centre to give stem cell treatment in this region. First-time stem cell treatment was given to the vertebral artery for a case of Mitochondrial Cytopathy. He has done more than 5000 angiograms and 1000 cardiac interventions before 2010 and thousands of cardiac patients are benefiting from his hands even today. He has installed Gold medals at university, State and National levels to promote research and academic activities in the younger generation. At present, he is the president of the International Helping hearts association and helping a number of Medical, Engineering, PhD students and also junior intermediate, high school and elementary school students. More than 20,000 students are given assistance by spending 15Lakhs every year. This munificent donation is from GKM and International helping hearts to whom he is the President. GKM is mainly meant for the renovation of temples and he has built a temple to his favourite Deity Lord Venkateswara in his home town. As an observer of faith apart from the temple, he has built a yoga centre, Mother and teacher temple (Teacher Prof. Padmavathi first women Cardiologist of India) at his birthplace. He is involved in the various developmental activities of the village which resulted in obtaining a National award for the development of the village. Being a Cardiologist, a teacher both medical and spiritual, an academician, a philanthropist researcher and an observer of religious faith he is continuing reading even to day 6-8 hours per day.
